Allston Branch Post Office is named.
June 1, 1868
Formerly the Cambridge Crossing Post Office, which opened in 1867, it is renamed for the local artist. The suggestion for the change was made by Rev. F.A. Whitney at a meeting on February 12, 1868 – despite the fact that Allston never lived or worked in the neighborhood. The surrounding community soon adopts the name Allston and becomes what is reputed to be the only community in the U.S. named for a painter.
